This takouba, at first glance being reminiscent of some European swords from the Middle Ages, comes from the Tuareg tribe of the Saharan region—proud warriors who sought to dominate the desert trade routes. This one is typical of its type, having the opposing crescent moon symbols on the blade, the flat and wide crossguard and the rounded disc pommel. The sword carries the usual signs of age: the long blade has been well used and the steel darkened overall. The edge shows the tell-tale signs of multiple sharpenings.
