Wootz and Gold Katar

A katar of familiar Mughal form, this piece is probably date-able to either the late 1700s or the early 1800s. The slender iron handle is fully decorated with gold leaf, applied to show a pleasing geometric pattern over its entire surface. Married to this is a long, tapering blade that has been formed entirely from a wootz steel that displays a fine-grained pattern. The blade is still sharp and its lines still crisp. Originally, the cutting edges and point might have been polished to a high sheen. A handsome decorative and functional piece, this katar comes with a modern sheath.
