A good chance to own some desirable wootz steel, this rugged punch dagger is probably at least two hundred years old and, clearly, it has been well used. At one point, the entire piece was heavily rusted and pitted but this has been ground back to show fresh steel in places. The blade is in better condition and swirling, speckled patterns can be seen playing within it. Interestingly, the cross-bar that accepts the blade and holds it firmly also shows signs of wootz so perhaps more of the hilt is too. A brown leather sheath is also present.
Tidying up the condition of this katar would be easy, although some collectors prefer pieces like this to show their age. Whatever the outlook, this is a rare opportunity to own some affordable Mughal era wootz.
