An Indo-Persian 'Sipar' Shield
This shield has finely detailed black enamel set into a copper base. The decoration is fine: tiny buds and slender tendrils curling across the shield’s face; serrated, three-lobed leaves; zigzag borders; and richly worked motifs plays on the four bosses. I’d estimate this to be from the early-to-mid-1800s in date. Several shields closely related to this offering have surfaced in recent years on the private market, and very few are in museum collections.
This example is in fine condition, retaining its original patina, bosses, rear loops, and knuckle-pad. The intricate decoration is almost entirely intact still, with some areas of loss here and there, which can hopefully be seen in the photos. It is a beautiful, under-stated and uncommon piece and would make a good addition to any collection. If you’d like to read about the history of this type of shield, I have a large article on my Patreon. Sadly, I only have room for two shields in this part of my collection so I am putting up four for sale, and will withdraw the final two from sale once the first two have sold.
If you’d like to own this interesting shield, it is available for £900, with worldwide shipping offered.
